University of Iowa Health Care hopes to continue its expansion away from its main campus by constructing, leasing and renovating three properties.

The Gazette reports UIHC is asking the Board of Regents permission to open a new medical clinic in Tiffin, move the Center for Disabilities and Development from its main campus to an office building off North Dodge Street in Iowa City, and lease and renovate an office building in Des Moines to provide cancer care.

Tiffin Family Medicine would be a joint project between Iowa City-based TPV Commercial LLC and UIHC and is expected to cost between $7 and $8.5 million. The entities would jointly design the facility, to be located on the northwest corner of Highway 6 and Kimberlite Street.

UIHC wants to raze the current Center for Disabilities and Development along Hawkins Drive to make way for the inpatient tower project. The services would be moved to a 58,000 square foot office space at 2610 Northgate Drive that would also include a new up to 25,000 square-foot addition.  Officials estimate by razing the current facility, they would save about $20 million in maintenance expenses.

UIHC is also asking the Regents to let them sign a ten-year lease for a 40 percent portion of an existing office building on Court Avenue in Des Moines. The U acquired Mission Cancer and Blood earlier this year, but the current leaseholder won’t extend a lease at its current location. The university would work with the landlord to design renovations at the Court Avenue location, expected to cost between $12 and $14 million.

UIHC officials say the projects are meant to provide new access points for patients so it will be easier for Iowans to receive needed care close to home.
