An Iowa City man was taken into custody Thursday night after forcibly taking a lighter from a woman in the downtown area.
The police report indicates 43-year-old Derrill Jones of the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street was in the area of the Englert Theatre at around 7:45pm when he allegedly stole a silver lighter from a woman by forcibly grabbing it from her hands. The woman also had money in her hands, but Jones reportedly was unable to take it from her.
The victim told police that Jones said he was going to kill her.
Jones was arrested, and a used pipe with suspected drug residue was reportedly found in his pocket.
He faces one count each of 2nd degree Robbery and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on both charges, Jones could be sentenced to over ten years in prison.
A no-contact order was requested between Jones and the victim.
