The Iowa City Community School District will offer full-day preschool at all 20 of its elementary schools beginning this fall.
The district will also offer free, half-day preschool in the morning at all elementary locations, with afternoon preschool available at some locations.
The Gazette reports many students attend full-day preschool for free by qualifying for the Shared Visions Preschool program for at-risk students, or their families meet the income guidelines for the free and reduced school food program.
Additionally, Grant, Hoover, Horn, Kirkwood, Lemme, Lincoln, Lucas, Mann, Penn, Shimek and Weber elementary schools will offer before and after school care for preschool students for a fee.
Sixth grade was moved out of the district’s elementary schools last fall, leaving room for precschool programs.
Educators at the ICCSD and across the state have advocated for the state to fully fund 4-year-old preschool, citing studies that show kids who get preschool education meet or are above average development rates.
