An Iowa City man’s failure to cooperate during an alleged violation of a no contact order has led to multiple charges.
Police say 52-year-old Teondrell Burnett of Heinz Road was stopped near his home at approximately 3:37am Sunday. A no-contact order prevented him from visiting the residence, as the subject of the no-contact order was a resident there. Burnett claimed he was there to return a vehicle.
He was reportedly uncooperative during the stop and was taken into custody. Burnett allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired decision making, and the odor of alcohol on his breath. An odor of marijuana was reportedly detected in the vehicle and on Burnett’s personal effects, and he admitted to drinking two beers. He refused breath and chemical tests at the scene. Burnett also allegedly made threatening statements to the officers, stating, “I will eff you up,” among others. .
Burnett was taken to the Iowa City Police Station for processing, and allegedly became more agitated, refusing to sit on a bench and making threatening comments towards officers. He reportedly shoved an officer after they tried to push him down on the bench. He ended up having to be restrained on the ground.
Burnett was taken to the UIHC main campus for evaluation. When discharged, he reportedly remained uncooperative, refusing to get into a waiting squad car. He was handcuffed with his hands in front of his body due to his size, and allegedly thrust his hands within inches of an officer’s face while threatening to strike them. He had to be forced into the police vehicle.
Burnett was charged with violation of the no-contact order, 1st offense OWI, 2nd degree Harassment, and two counts each of Interference with Official Acts and Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations. If convicted on all charges, Burnett could face a prison term of up to over four years.
