The Iowa City City Council has voted to rezone a north side neighborhood property to make way for two apartment complexes.
The Council voted 6-1 to rezone the property from single and multi-family homes to a high density single family and medium density multifamily zone to allow the apartment complex to be constructed. The supermajority vote was necessary as neighbors filed a petition of protest.
The proposed buildings would hold 42 units each. The developer, TSB Holdings LLC, is a company owned and operated by Tracy Barkalow, who now wants to sell the property to the City to use for affordable housing.
Barkalow listed the property at $9 million. The City did not address Barkalow’s proposal at this week’s council meeting.
Tuesday’s vote was one of three required. The third and final vote is scheduled for the June 3rd Council meeting.
