An Iowa City man convicted of third degree theft just last month was arrested again on the same charge last week.

On Friday morning, 45-year-old Yahya Karim, whose address is listed as Shelter House, was at the Kwik Star on Keokuk Street and was reportedly seen on camera taking a charger block still in its packaging and putting it into his pocket. He then went into the store’s bathroom.

Kwik Star staff located the packaging for the charger block in the bathroom, but the charger was gone.  Karim was then located at the counter, using the charger. He allegedly refused to return the item, valued at $26.99.

Karim has two previous theft convictions; one in April 2023 and one on April 28th of this year.  He was charged with 3rd degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to two years if convicted.  As of Monday morning, he remained in the Johnson County Jail on $2000 bond.
