An Iowa City man was taken into custody Monday after allegedly breaking into an unoccupied vehicle in downtown Iowa City last month.

Police say 24-year-old Deon Brand of Brookside Drive was seen on city-owned security cameras on the 200 block of South Linn Street at 4:10pm April 28th. Brand allegedly entered an unoccupied vehicle with the intent to steal money that he believed was inside.

A search of Brand’s criminal record showed two burglary convictions in 2019; one for 3rd degree burglary of an unoccupied vehicle, and the other for 3rd degree burglary.

A warrant was issued by Judge Deborah Minot on May 2nd. Brand faces a felony 3rd Degree of a Motor Vehicle charge that could lead to him being sentenced to a maximum five years in prison if convicted.
