A transient was arrested after allegedly stealing a phone from a resident at 501 Southgate Saturday morning.

According to police, 29-year-old Devonte King accused the victim of stealing property.  The victim emptied his pockets and sat his phone down to prove that he hadn’t taken anything from King. When the victim was distracted, King allegedly picked up his phone, but was observed doing so by a male witness.

King later reportedly gave the phone to a female and instructed her to sell it at a phone kiosk.  After the woman found out the phone was stolen, she notified police.

King was charged with 3rd degree Theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years if convicted.

King was picked up three days later for the incident on the 1800 block of Boyrum Street. Police allegedly found a glass pipe with burnt residue in his underwear.  King reportedly stated post-Miranda that the pipe was for smoking meth, but that he was just holding it for a friend. He was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.
