A Hope House resident is accused of stealing a car, then crashing it into a mobile home near Oxford.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says it received a report just after 9:30 Saturday night of a white male in a white t-shirt and jorts stealing a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria from the Parkview manufactured housing community on Lower Old Highway 6. The suspect, 49-year-old William Porter, then allegedly crashed the car into a nearby trailer and fled to the north. A drone located him hiding in a nearby ditch. Porter reportedly showed multiple signs of intoxication.
An investigation determined that Porter had gotten into an altercation with the car’s owner and took the vehicle despite the owner telling him not to. Porter is now charged with Operating a Vehicle Without Owners’ Consent and Operating While Intoxicated. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of three years in jail.
Porter was sentenced to ten years in prison on a 1st Degree Robbery charge in 2018 after using a gun to rob Romantix on Kirkwood Avenue. Police say Porter took cash from the register as well as several items of merchandise.
