City of Iowa City news release

The Black Voices Project proudly invites the community to the 2025 Juneteenth Celebration, 1-9 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the South District Market Parking Lot, 925 Hwy 6 East.

This year’s theme — “Reckoning: Reclaiming the Past, Remembering Black Voices, Reshaping the Future” — centers community healing, historical truth, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equity.

We are honored to have Mayor Bruce Teague join the celebration with a message of unity and a warm welcome to the community. His continued support of Juneteenth and Iowa City’s South District exemplifies true civic leadership.

Acclaimed blues musician Kevin B.F. Burt will headline the evening with a performance you don’t want to miss. His award-winning voice and message of hope, resilience, and cultural pride will inspire and uplift all in attendance.

Visitors can also enjoy a wide variety of flavors from some of our area’s beloved Black and Brown-owned food vendors, including: Royceann’s Soulfood, Gyro Hicks, Rodney’s Jamaican Jerk, Da Flavor Unit, Salih’s Kitchen.

A free community meal will be provided to over 300 guests as part of our “Freedom Feast: Soul Food & Solidarity.”

Events featured at the celebration include:

  • The Freedom Walk, Black Style in Motion – Juneteenth fashion show
  • Truth, Told – Community storytelling and spoken word
  • Rhythms of Resilience – Music and dance performances throughout the day
  • Vendor Market, Kids Zone & Resource Booths – Family-friendly fun for all ages

This event is free and open to the public. Bring your lawn chairs, good energy, and love for community to celebrate a day of culture, remembrance, and joy. The rain date is Sunday, June 22, 2025.
