An Iowa City man convicted earlier this year for robbing the Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust branch on Council Street has pleaded to two additional robberies in federal court.

The Gazette reports 22-year-old Andrew Derr, who also had a residence in Maryland, was convicted of two counts of interference of commerce by robbery and one count of money laundering.

Derr reportedly was discharged from the military for misconduct in 2023 and moved to Iowa City. He robbed a Casey’s store in Robbins on December 27th that year, stealing over $7000 in cash and bottles of alchohol.   The next day, officers used a K9 unit to attempt to track Derr.  He allegedly dropped some of the stolen items and led a path to where Derr’s cellphone was found.

Derr tried to purchase a firearm at Finn and Feather on New Year’s Eve 2023 but was denied. The next day, he robbed a Kum & Go in Cedar Rapids, making off with $245 and other items.

In both convenience store robberies, he brandished a gun, which one employee familiar with guns believed was a replica.

Derr’s most daring robbery was the Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust branch on January 3rd last year. US Marshals tried to arrest Derr at his Iowa City apartment and found a note stating “Catch me if you can; you shouldn’t have let me go the 1st time.”

He stole over $16,000 in cash from the bank and was convicted in Linn County District Court this past march and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Derr will be sentenced at  a later date and faces an additional sentence of up to 60 years.
