Iowa City Police have arrested a transient they say broke into a vacant residence Thursday night.

Officers were called to a house on Deforest Avenue just after 5:15 p.m. for reports of vandalism. A basement door had been broken in, and the reporting party said he had encountered 28-year-old Jamaal Brooks inside the house around 1:30 that afternoon. Brooks is a transient, and the house is supposed to be vacant.

Brooks is now charged with 4th Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
