A man who once bit part of another man’s face off and absconded from Hope House is back in custody.

44-year-old Larry Johnson was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 5:45 Friday afternoon. The Iowa Department of Corrections says Johnson signed out of Hope House at 9:00 Wednesday morning to go to Walmart with the intention of being back by 10. Johnson did not return to the Holiday Road facility.

Johnson is now charged with Absence From Custody. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.

Johnson had a 1st Degree Burglary charge pleaded down to Assault Causing Bodily Injury after a March 2024 incident that saw him force his way into an apartment at 501 Southgate and bite the resident on the face, causing what was described as a “large chunk of skin” to be detached from the man’s face.
