Iowa City Police have arrested a suspect they say broke into the residence of and threatened to kill a man who refused to pay him for a ride home.

According to arrest records, at approximately 1:00 on the morning of June 9th 30-year-old Daniel Guerrero-Lopez of North Linn Street gave the other man a ride to his home in the Hilltop manufactured housing community on Waterfront Drive. When they arrived, Guerrero-Lopez reportedly demanded to be paid $50. When the man refused, Guerrero-Lopez allegedly punched him in the face, then armed himself with a stick and used it to hit the man in the shoulder. The two then scuffled on the ground, with Guerrero-Lopez allegedly kicking the other man in the lower back. The alleged victim was able to escape with a swollen lip, cuts on his back, and scrapes to his left arm. He also reported having difficulty walking.

The man went into his home and went to bed. At about 4 a.m., he was awakened by noises and discovered Guerrero-Lopez inside his trailer. Guerrero-Lopez allegedly told the man he’d planned to kill him in his sleep. The resident fled, and Guerrero-Lopez reportedly stole cash and the man’s phone from his bedroom.

Police say security footage from Hilltop shows Guerrero-Lopez’s car arriving at 1:11 a.m. and leaving the area at 4:05 a.m. A search warrant executed on the vehicle reportedly turned up some of the alleged victim’s possessions.

Guerrero-Lopez was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 9:45 Thursday morning and charged with 2nd Degree Burglary, 1st Degree Harassment, and Assault Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 13 years in prison.
