An allegedly intoxicated Iowa City woman is accused of assaulting EMTs who were trying to take her to the hospital.

54-year-old Deanna McKinney of 6th Avenue was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 2:00 Sunday morning. Iowa City Police say they encountered McKinney while responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment on Oakcrest Street at 10:30 on the night of July 4th.  Arriving officers say McKinney was outside, showing signs of intoxication. She was reportedly uncooperative and resisted being taken to a local hospital, despite first-responders recommending she receive a medical evaluation.

EMTs, police and firefighters restrained McKinney, who at one point allegedly grabbed a paramedic by the shirt collar, pulled her toward her and would not let go. McKinney was eventually restrained and sedated. A breath sample was not obtained.

McKinney is now charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both counts, she faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
