An Iowa City man was charged after allegedly hitting a parked car and leaving the scene of the incident.

Police say 47-year-old Lukelelo Msebengi of Spring Ridge Road was observed driving a Kia Sorento eastbound on the 400 block of Cherry Avenue when he hit a parked car facing westbound.  He then reportedly drove off the road to the south.

A short time later, Msebengi reportedly got out of his vehicle, beer bottle in hand, fled the area on foot, and ran into a nearby residence on Balsam Court.  The people at the home identified Msebengi as the suspect.

Both vehicles were found to be severely disabled if not totaled. A check of Msebengi’s driving record showed his status as barred as a habitual offender until November 2028.

He was charged with Driving While Barred and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to two years in jail.
