An Iowa City man faces felony theft and timber buyer violations after an investigation by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
45-year-old Tyler Robert Rogers is charged with 1st Degree Theft and 3 counts of Timber Buyer – Violation of Surety or Accounting Requirements.
The Johnson County Attorney’s Office says in February, Rogers allegedly directed loggers to harvest 132 trees owned by Michael Kennedy and others by falsely and fraudulently telling the loggers that he owned the trees and the land in rural Johnson County. He reportedly failed to honestly account for the timber to its owner, with said timber having a value in excess of $10,000.
Rogers had his initial appearance Thursday morning at the Johnson County Courthouse, where a judge released him on a $10,000 cash bond. Arraignment is scheduled for September 12th.
If convicted on all counts, Rogers faces a maximum of 13 years in prison.
