A Coralville man is accused of an assault in downtown Iowa City that sent one person to the hospital.

Iowa City Police say an officer observed several people involved in an argument near the corner of College and Linn Streets at 1:00 Sunday morning. The group split up, and one of the participants came to the officer with a swollen lip and blood on his face. Witnesses and the victim claimed 32-year-old Devarius Nelson of 1st Street punched the man and stomped on his head. The victim was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Nelson was found nearby…allegedly with blood on his clothing and knuckles. He’s now charged with Assault With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
