An Iowa City man accused of brandishing a replica gun while an accomplice assaulted another person with a baseball bat has been given a deferred judgment.
20-year-old Willie Garrett and 19-year-old Leshawn Garrett…who lived together on Muscatine Avenue…allegedly met another person at Mercer Park at about 6:00 on the night of February 22nd. Willie Garrett was reportedly armed with a replica Glock 17 BB gun, while Leshawn Garrett allegedly hit the person with a baseball bat. The incident was captured on video. Iowa City Police say Willie Garrett admitted to brandishing the replica gun to scare the other person.
The Garretts were each charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury, Going Armed With Intent, and Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon. If convicted on all counts, they each would have faced a maximum of 12 years in prison.
Leshawn Garrett is also accused of violating his probation on charges stemming from a July 2023 incident that saw him reportedly threatening people with a knife during a pair of robbery attempts on the Ped Mall.
Online records show late last month Judge Deborah Minot gave Willie Garrett a deferred judgment and two years of probation on the Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon charge. The other charges were dropped.
Leshawn Garrett has a case management conference set for November 10th.
