An Iowa City man reached a plea deal last week on a harassment charge.

Police say 37-year-old Andrew Murphy of Wayne Avenue and the victim had been living together in an intimate relationship until January 2025. When the relationship ended, the woman moved out of their shared residence due to alleged concerns about Murphy’s behavior and possession of a firearm.

This month, Murphy reportedly sent threatening text messages on the 11th and 12th, and disrupted the woman’s workplace by showing up there.  Text messages included Murphy allegedly threatening to commit suicide in front of the woman, and showing up at an event where she operated a vendor booth to destroy it.

The contact with the victim caused her to feel intimidated and alarmed.

Murphy was arrested last week and pleaded guilty to a charge of 3rd degree Harassment. He was fined $105 and given a no-contact order by Judge Jason Burns.
