Alliant Energy’s plan to build a new natural gas-fired power plant in Fairfax has been put on the back burner.

The Gazette reports after meeting with resistance from some local residents and officials at the nearby Eastern Iowa Airport said in a statement to the city that it is “deprioritizing” the Fairfax location.

The statement said while Alliant had not selected a site for their proposed project, they have decided that Fairfax is not a priority spot. It went on to say that they continue to evaluate other viable sites in the region.

Some Fairfax residents opposed the plant, concerned about potential health impacts, noise, odors, and quality of life issues. And the Airport Commission said the height of stacks from the plant would emit plumes, which could impact pilot visibility and affect aircraft safety.
