Citing costs that don’t justify demand, the North Liberty City Council is discussing a transition from its twice-daily, fixed route bus service to on-demand paratransit in the near future.

The Press-Citizen reports North Liberty contracts with the City of Coralville for a bus route that circulates around the heart of the city twice a day, with first stops at 6:30 a.m. and final stops shortly after 6 p.m. North Liberty paid Coralville about $103,000 in fiscal year 2025 to run the bus service. A written staff report estimated that early data suggested about nine North Liberty residents ride the route daily.

The council will discuss when it wants to terminate its contract with Coralville for the bus service at a later date.  Mayor Chris Hoffman said the service won’t go away because residents need it to get to work, to grocery stores, doctor appointments and the like.  He said, “It’s just going to be in a different formant, and hopefully a better experience for them.”

The city has other options for public transit, including paratransit programs, but there are limitations on scope of service and whether residents qualify for certain programs.
