An Iowa City man was arrested Friday afternoon after allegedly taking another person’s phone as it was laying on the counter of a downtown store.

Police were dispatched to the Old Capitol Center at 4:40pm on reports of a theft. Upon arrival, the victim said his IPhone 15 pro was taken from the counter by a black male in his 30s.  Camera footage reportedly showed the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Lamon Lewis of South Lucas Street, leaving the store and walking eastbound on Washington Street.

Using findmyIPhone technology, police were able to track the phone to the area of the 400 block of South Lucas Street. A tenant identified Lewis to police and advised what apartment he was in. Lewis allegedly told police that he was in the store but denied having the phone.  Officers reportedly were unable to locate the phone, valued at about $500, due to it being turned off and Lewis being uncooperative.

Lewis was arrested and charged with 4th degree Theft. He faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
