A transient is accused of flashing a gun during an altercation at the Old Capitol Town Center.
19-year-old Edward Kellum was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 9:30 Thursday night. Iowa City Police say Kellum was arguing with someone at the mall just after 6:15 last Monday night when Kellum allegedly pulled a gun halfway out of his pocket. Video of the incident shows Kellum pulling a metallic object consistent with a handgun halfway out of his pocket.
Kellum was located during a Thursday night traffic stop in Coralville. A Smith & Wesson SD9 9mm handgun was found on the floorboard of the vehicle near Kellum’s feet. The gun matched the silver metal object from the security video.
Kellum is legally unable to possess a firearm due to a Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury conviction stemming from a September 2024 incident during which he reportedly hit another man in the head with a metal pipe near the intersection of Clinton Street and Iowa Avenue. He now faces a new charge of Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon. If convicted, Kellum faces a maximum of five years in prison.
Kellum was wanted for other probation violations as well, including a reported assault at a Jasper County manufactured housing community last month.
