City of Iowa City news release

In anticipation of wintry weather later in the week, the City of Iowa City will suspend the leaf vacuum at the end of the day on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2025.

Beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 25 and continuing on Wednesday, Streets crews will apply brine to City streets in anticipation of snowfall this coming weekend. Beginning Friday, Nov. 28, crews will prepare equipment for snow removal, necessitating the suspension of leaf vacuuming.

City staff will assess the weather forecast for early December before determining whether the leaf vacuum program will resume in 2025.

Community members with leaves remaining have multiple options:

  • Paper yard waste bags (with $2 sticker) or City issued organics (yard and food waste) carts can be used and will be collected on your regular curbside service day. See icgov.org/curbside for details.
  • Residents can haul their leaves to the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center at 3900 Hebl Ave, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Yard waste fees apply; the cost is $24/ton with a $5 minimum charge that covers up to 400 pounds. Note: the landfill will be closed Thursday, Nov. 27, but open regular hours on Friday, Nov. 28 (7 a.m. to 4 p.m. p.m.) and Saturday, Nov. 29 (7 a.m. to noon).
