With more than 30 Escucha Mi Voz members testifying and witnessing, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors discussed the 4th Amendment Due Process and Workplace Safety Resolution during Wednesday’s work session and advanced the proposal to the formal meeting agenda for an official vote on Thursday, December 18 at 9:00 a.m.
According to a release from the advocacy group, the resolution would require judicial warrants for ICE or other law enforcement to access non-public areas of county facilities, direct the posting of clear signage, support Know Your Rights training for employees and employers, and encourage local businesses to adopt similar protections against warrantless workplace raids. The full resolution can be found at the Johnson County Iowa.gov Board of Supervisors page under work session agendas.
The proposal emerged after the violent abduction of Jorge Gonzalez Ochoa at Bread Garden Market in downtown Iowa City in September and reflects growing community demand for clear constitutional safeguards in workplaces across the county.
The resolution has widespread support from the county employee’s labor union, AFSCME Local 183, and other department heads.
Escucha Mi Voz Iowa is calling on supervisors to keep the resolution strong and pass it without weakening its core protections.
