The Johnson County Board of Supervisors voted 3–2 Thursday to reject the proposed Workplace Safety & Due Process Resolution, which would have required judicial warrants before ICE could enter non-public areas of workplaces, mandated “No Warrant, No Entry” signage, provided training and resources, and encouraged local businesses to adopt similar protections.

The resolution failed after Board Chair Jon Green reversed his position. His no vote was joined by supervisors Rod Sullivan and Lisa Green-Douglass. V Fixmer-Oraiz and Mandi Remington voted in favor of the measure.

Immigrant advocacy group Eschuca Mi Vos called Green’s reversal shameful and hypocritical.  In an e-mail to supporters, the group said they felt betrayed by Green, who stood with them at rallies and accompanied them to ICE check-in appointments.

Supporters of the resolution said it would have offered more protections from ICE, but those that oppose it say it is only an offer of support, and not actual protection.

Sullivan read a letter from Iowa City Councilor Mazahir Salih, who is also an immigrant. She wrote that some immigrants don’t feel safe with public actions like the resolution because it could draw unnecessary attention to immigration enforcement.  She encouraged the Board to table the resolution.
