Iowa lawmakers have reacted to news about a fatal shooting by an ICE officer Wednesday in Minneapolis.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement categorizing 37-year-o,d Renee Nicole Good as a domestic terrorist who tried to hit an ICE agent with her car.  They claimed the officer fired in an effort to protect his fellow agents and the public, saying he “relied on his training and saved his own life, as well as the lives of his fellow officers.”

Video of the incident shows Good driving away from the officer, and he fired three shots.

Iowa Republicans Ashley Hinson and Randy Feenstra accused the Left of inciting violence against law enforcement in separate social media posts. Both said the ICE agents put their lives on the line and protect our communities every single day.

The reaction from Democrats was decidedly different.

Iowa State Representative Angel Ramirez  of Cedar Rapids called ICE “ a modern-day Gestapo operating with impunity. They do not belong in our communities, and we must demand accountability, justice, and an end to this brutality now.”

State Rep Jennifer Konfrst of Polk County posted on Facebook, “A US citizen was killed by ICE in the streets of Minneapolis and Americans deserve answers. We need an immediate, independent and complete investigation into the tragedy we saw unfold on video. Today’s actions did nothing to address immigration concerns and instead thrust this community into yet another period of fear and grief.”

Local advocacy group Escucha Mi Voz, whose members have been accompanying immigrants to their ICE check-ins, said in a statement, “We will continue to confront authoritarianism, defend one another, and build people power until ICE is out of our communities and every worker and resident can live with safety, dignity, and justice.”
