Officials with the Iowa City Community School District reviewed protocol when law enforcement wishes to enter a school.

The Gazette reports deputy superintendent Chace Ramey said any law enforcement officer at an Iowa City school building will be met at the door by school staff. School principals are to communicate with district officials who can help them navigate the situation and get legal advice if needed. They will not be allowed in without providing identification and a warrant.

School board member Charlie Eastham said the topic is top of mind because the federal government, in his words, “stopped complying with the 4th Amendment of the US Constitution, which prevents unreasonable search and seizure. Eastham said that’s potentially harmful to students in the district.

Spokeswoman Kristin Pedersen said the document referenced in the board meeting is “internal administrative guidance that has been provided to school administrators.” It is not adopted school board policy.
