Area transient faces additional charges after allegedly assaulting jail staffer

An area transient faces a new felony charge after allegedly attacking a jail sergeant.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:40am  Sunday at the Johnson County facility. According to court records, 51-year-old Jeffrey Smith was fed breakfast and attacked the sergeant after refusing to hand back his tray.  Smith allegedly lunged at the sergeant, wrapping his arms around the man’s head and neck.

The sergeant had to use physical force to subdue Smith and stop the assault. He sustained an abrasion to his forehead and a scratch across his eyes.

Smith was charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted on the charge.
