A bill introduced into the Iowa legislature would require local municipalities to follow the governor’s guidance on when flags should be lowered to half-staff.
House Study Bill 634 was introduced by Governor Kim Reynolds. It comes after Johnson County Supervisor Chairman Jon Green refused to lower the county’s flags to half-staff for Charlie Kirk last September. The conservative activist was shot and killed while giving a speech in Utah. Reynolds ordered flags at half-staff despite Kirk not having held any elected office or having any ties to the state of Iowa other than past appearances at the University of Iowa.
Under the current bill, complaints about non-compliance would be directed to the state attorney general, who would then be allowed to seek injunctive relief to obtain compliance.
The bill was still in subcommittee as of Thursday.
