A former University of Iowa Health Care therapist has reached a plea deal concerning allegations that he sexually exploited some of his patients.
46-year-old James Burkhalter reached the deal on Friday, agreeing to plead guilty to three counts of Sexual Exploitation by a Counselor or Therapist. 11 other such counts were dismissed.
The incidents in question took place between 2019 and 2023, both while Burkhalter was working for UIHC and after he was fired by the university in May of 2022 and became a social worker.
Each charge carries a maximum five-year prison term. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
