A transient who masturbated publicly for hours inside the Iowa City WET shelter is back behind bars.
29-year-old Rodney Gary was booked into the Johnson County Jail Tuesday morning. Iowa City Police say Gary masturbated in public view of other WET shelter residents for about two hours on December 10th. He was observed by three different victims and on camera.
Gary reportedly had his penis out and his hand moving up and down in an effort to pleasure himself. He was confronted by staff and told to stop.
Approximately ten minutes later, staff at the Southgate Avenue facility noticed him masturbating again. Camera footage reportedly showed Gary with his blanket down to his knees, masturbating in open view of the people around him.
Gary reached a plea deal in December, but he’s accused of skipping his February 5th sentencing hearing. A new sentencing date is set for March 6th, with a bond review hearing scheduled for February 19th.
