A Cedar Rapids man has been fined for slashing another person with a knife at a Coralville construction site last month.

Coralville Police say 49-year-old Pedro Barboza Moreno of North Towne Court NE removed a utility knife from his person and purposely sliced at the victim’s face on the morning of January 5th.  The victim sustained a serious injury to their bottom lip which required sutures to be secured back together.

Barboza Moreno reportedly stated he did it on purpose and knew he was slicing at the victim’s face area.

Barboza Moreno was charged with Going Armed with Intent and Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted on both counts, he could have been sentenced to up to fifteen years in prison. But Barboza Moreno reached  a plea deal on Friday, and he was fined $430 for the first count and given credit for time served. The willful injury charge was dismissed by Judge David Cox.
