The University of Iowa is proposing the closure of six majors and two academic units within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The move comes after a review showed each major had fewer than 25 students enrolled in each.
The targeted programs and the number of students currently enrolled are African American studies, Bachelor of Arts (nine); Applied physics, Bachelor of Science (eight); Classical languages, Bachelor of Arts (14); Gender, women’s, and sexuality studies, Bachelor of Arts (12); Italian, Bachelor of Arts (12); and Russian, Bachelor of Arts (10).
The two units up for elimination are the African American Studies program and the Department of Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies. School officials say the two units are now illegal under the State of Iowa’s recently-passed anti-DEI laws.
Each closure will require approval by the Iowa Board of Regents at its April meeting.
