Iowa City celebrates Fair Housing Month

City of Iowa City release
04/02/26

During National Fair Housing Month, Iowa City’s Office of Human Rights reaffirms its commitment to ensuring all individuals have equal access to housing within our community.

The 1968 Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, national origin and sex. The act was later expanded to include those with disabilities and familial status.

Ensuring fair housing is not only a legal obligation but a shared community responsibility. When individuals and families have equal access to housing, it strengthens neighborhoods, promotes stability, and fosters opportunity for everyone.
