A pair of local veterans is fighting to keep the current jet memorial in front of the Iowa City Municipal Airport.
The F-86 Sabre was installed at the airport’s entrance on South Riverside Drive in 1972 as a memorial to Vietnam prisoners of war. But city officials are considering replacing the jet with a new memorial, citing increasing maintenance costs and an estimated $10,000 in repairs. Officials with the Clinton Airport have already expressed interest in moving the jet there.
Iowa City veterans Howard Horan and Steve Miller told KCRG TV-9 that the jet is a memorial for all of those who served, and they’ll fight to keep it in Iowa City. They say they’re planning fundraising efforts, and will address the Iowa City Airport Commission at its next meeting on Thursday.
