Amana man facing felony charges after firing shotgun at individuals

An Amana man faces numerous charges after firing a warning shot at individuals he allegedly had an altercation with.

The incident occurred just before 9pm Monday. According to police, 64-year-old Todd Poulson of Amana Road NW got into an altercation that became physical. Poulson allegeldy obtained a shotgun from his vehicle and fired a round about 15 feet above their heads, causing them to fear for their safety.

Paulson reportedly left the scene, which was not far from his residence. He was stopped in Swisher for equipment violations. Upon contact, he allegedly had the odor of ingested alcohol, bloodshot watery eyes, impaired balance and slurred speech. Paulson also reportedly admitted to drinking before getting behind the wheel.

After performing poorly on field sobriety tests, he refused to submit to breath or urine tests.

A check of Paulson’s record showed he didn’t have a valid driver’s license. The shotgun involved in the earlier incident wasn’t located in the vehicle, but Paulson allegedly admitted to throwing it out of the vehicle prior to being stopped. Deputies reportedly recovered the weapon.

Paulson was charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault while displaying a Dangerous Weapon, OWI first offense, Possession of Dangerous Weapons while Intoxicated, two equipment violations, and a citation for no driver’s license. If convicted on all counts, Paulson faces a maximum prison sentence of 9 years.
