An Iowa City man was arrested over the weekend on driving while intoxicated charges after putting his vehicle in a ditch.

The incident occurred just before 5am Saturday on Sioux Avenue. 52-year-old Oscar Castro of Bay Ridge Drive allegedly veered off the roadway and into the ditch.. When contacted, he reportedly had bloodshot glossy eyes, slurred speech and displayed poor balance, stumbling when asked out of his GMC Canyon.

Castro allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol and asked that he immediately be taken to jail.

After performing poorly on field tests, he consented to a PBT showing his breath-alcohol level at .215 percent. Castro refused Datamaster testing.

A check of his driving record showed his status as revoked through January 2036.

Castro has been charged with OWI first offense, driving while revoked, and failure to maintain control. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to two years behind bars.
