A suspect faces weapons and drug charges after his early Sunday morning arrest in a downtown Iowa City parking ramp.
Iowa City Police were patrolling the Capitol Street ramp just after 1 a.m. when they discovered an occupied 2013 Kia Optima parked on the top floor. The vehicle allegedly smelled of marijuana, and the driver…24-year-old Mustafa Aliomer of Dolen Place…allegedly had rolling papers in his lap. Investigators say Aliomer told them he had a pistol in his glove compartment, and a search turned up a Glock 19, marijuana shake, and a burnt marijuana roach. Witnesses admitted to smoking marijuana with Aliomer inside the vehicle, and he’s now charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance – 2nd Offense and Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons. If convicted on both counts, he faces up to three years in jail.
Iowa City and University of Iowa Police recently stepped up weekend, late-night patrols downtown after the April 19th shooting on the Ped Mall that left five people injured.
