Illinois man accused of breaking $2,000+ electronic security gate at Iowa City Public Library

An Illinois man faces charges that he broke an electronic gate worth over $2,000 at the Iowa City Public Library.

Arrest reports indicate just after 5:00 on the night of April 20th 27-year-old Jalen Wallace of Berkeley, Illinois walked through the security gate that makes sure patrons don’t leave with books that have not yet been scanned. Wallace allegedly struck the gate as he walked through, causing damage. The cost to replace the gate is estimated at $2,195.

Wallace is charged with 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Court records show the night before the library incident Wallace was charged with Public Intoxication and Aggravated Theft for an incident at the Court Street parking ramp.
