Coralville Police say a Tiffin man was chemically impaired when he borrowed a vehicle from his workplace without permission and crashed it into a mailbox.
According to arrest records, just before 11:15 Friday night 25-year-old Patrick Ames of Ella Avenue struck a mailbox at 1715 13th Street with a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica. The vehicle belongs to Ames’ employer, and police say he was not on the clock when he took it Friday morning, and he did so without permission.
A witness reported seeing Ames hit the mailbox. Ames was stopped by police as he was on his way back to his residence, and he reportedly showed signs of impairment.
Police say Ames’ breath alcohol level was .000%, but he agreed to a urine test. A green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana was allegedly found among his personal belongings.
Ames is charged with Operating a Vehicle Without Owners’ Consent and Operating While Intoxicated. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of three years in jail.
