A Cedar Rapids man faces jail time after an equipment violation led to the discovery of drugs in his vehicle.

A traffic stop was initiated at 2:20am Monday on 30-year-old Dakota Jansen of 30th St SW. He was on 120th Street at Echo Avenue when an officer observed a burned-out tail light. Jansen allegedly didn’t have his license with him, and a K9 was employed on the vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, a glass pipe with burnt residue and a white powder substance was found in the vehicle. Jansen stated he was a former drug user and had used all the drugs, but also has a medical marijuana card and a vape pen on his person.

Deputies field tested the powder and it tested positive for methamphetamine.

A search of Jansen’s person allegedly turned up a firearm.

He was charged with person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, possession of drug paraphernalia, marijuana possession, and a controlled substance violation. If convicted on all counts, Jensen could be sentenced to over two years in prison if convicted on all counts. He was also cited for no driver’s license and given a repair order for the tail light.
