An Iowa City man was arrested Monday afternoon after an alleged assault downtown.

Police say 45-year-old Kenneth Davis of 420th Street SE approached the victim on the sidewalk at the southwest corner of Linn and Washington Streets. He then reportedly struck the victim in the face with his fist approximately 5 times.

The victim sustained lacerations to their face as a result of the incident.

Davis was charged with Assault causing Bodily Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to a year if convicted.

Davis has a lengthy criminal history. He’s currently awaiting a July 1st trial on charges that he stole the Pride flag from the pole outside the Johnson County Administration Building on March 30th.

Davis just served an 87-day jail sentence for setting an air conditioning unit on fire behind DC’s on the Ped Mall on the night of October 28th, 2024.

Just over three weeks before the reported arson, Davis was fined $855 for placing religious reading materials on the steps of the Johnson County Courthouse in July of 2024, then calling 9-1-1 to report “destructive” materials had been placed there, leading to a response from the Johnson County Metro Bomb Team.
