A bridge replacement project will close a road northwest of Kalona starting on Monday.

According to the Washington County Engineer’s Office, 110th Street will be closed to traffic west of Juniper Avenue, nearly three miles west of Highway 1. The closure is necessary to replace the existing narrow and weight restricted bridge over Deer Creek, near Juniper Avenue.

This $857,000 project will be funded using Federal Highway Bridge Program funds, which target structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridges.

The existing 125-foot-long by 20-foot-wide bridge was built in 1952 and will be replaced with a 130 foot-long by 30-foot-wide concrete slab bridge, which will make travel through the area easier once finished.  Building the new bridge is expected to take 4-5 months.

Questions about the project may be directed to the Washington County Engineer’s Office.
