An Iowa City transient who choked a woman to the point of unconsciousness was arrested Monday afternoon.

Officers were called to the Community Crisis Center and Food bank at 1121 Gilbert Court at approximately 1:55pm on reports of an assault between a male and female. They were able to interview both parties as well as witnesses.

The incident that prompted the call involved 26-year-old David Wesley and the victim. Wesley allegedly pushed the woman to the ground in the parking lot causing pain and emotional distress. The two said they are in an intimate relationship and stay together.

Further investigation into the matter revealed that the previous evening, Wesley allegedly assaulted the woman, strangling her to unconsciousness and causing her to urinate herself. The victim had marks on her neck consistent with being strangled. Wesley also is accused of biting her cheek and nose, breaking the skin.

Wesley has been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault impeding airflow, Domestic Abuse Assault causing injury, and Domestic Abuse Assault with intent to inflict serious injury. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to a maximum of eight years in prison.

A no-contact order was requested between the woman and Wesley.
