Stealing a car from outside an Iowa City restaurant has led to the arrest of an Illinois transient.
Just after 8pm Saturday 33-year-old Trell Grant allegedly entered a 2007 Chrysler Pacifica that was parked outside the Taco Bell on Highway 6 East. He then drove it away from the scene, but Grant was pulled over by Iowa City Police a short time later and arrested. Grant told police he took the vehicle because the doors were open and the keys were left inside.
Grant was also found in possession of two phones belonging to the car’s owner: an iPhone SE5 and a Motorola.
Grant is charged with 1st Degree Theft and 5th Degree Theft. If convicted, he faces a maximum of over ten years in prison.
Grant is listed as a transient in police records, although his driver’s license shows him to be an Illinois resident.
