The city of Iowa City has announced a $9 million upgrade to American Legion Road.
Senior Civil Engineer Scott Sovers tells the Cedar Rapids Gazette that the project is in anticipation of future growth in the area and the city wants to replace the current asphalt road with no sidewalks or ditches with a better roadway.
Plans call for installing storm sewer, adding dedicated bike lanes in both directions and a ten-foot multi-use sidewalk on the north side.
A planned pedestrian underpass at Barrington Road would allow students to safely cross American Legion Road to Hoover Elementary.
The city also plans a roundabout in the intersection with Scott Boulevard to replace the four-way stop.
Sovers tells the Gazette that the earliest the project will go to bid is late spring, but will delay it to the following spring rather than bid it later in the year because bid pricing tends to run higher then.
$3.6 million will be funded by a state Surface Transportation Block Grant with the rest coming from Iowa City general funds.
The public can find out more about the project at an informational meeting Thursday from 5-7pm at Hoover Elementary.
