A Cedar Rapids man with a previous felony conviction was arrested Thursday after allegedly being found with a gun at an Iowa City grocery store.

Police were contacted by a civilian at Waterfront HyVee shortly before 2pm on reports of a suspicious male that had just walked by officers. The person reported that the man, identified as 37-year-old Chris Kelly of A Avenue Northeast appeared to be clutching his right side and appeared to have a gun in the right pocket.

Officers made contact with Kelly after he allegedly failed to use a crosswalk to cross the street and was obstructing traffic at Waterfront Drive and Stevens Drive. At first, Kelly provided a false first name of Marcus, and attempted to flee. He was apprehended and taken into custody.

A search of his person reportedly turned up five small baggies of marijuana totaling about 18 grams and a .380 caliber weapon with a loaded magazine.

As Kelly is a convicted felon, being sentenced for extortion in October of 2015, he is not allowed to carry firearms. He also has a domestic assault conviction in Johnson County from July of that year.

Kelly has been charged with interference with official acts, dominion or control of a firearm as a felon, carrying weapons, providing false identification information, and a controlled substance violation. If convicted on all charges, Kelly a maximum sentence of over twelve years in prison.
