Allegedly attacking paramedics inside an ambulance on its way to the hospital has led to a Tiffin man’s arrest.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, 29-year-old Carlos Gomez Garcia of Main Street was being seen by the Louisa County Ambulance Service in Columbus Junction on the afternoon of April 17th. Due to drug abuse and psychological issues, staff decided to transport Gomez Garcia to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
As the ambulance was passing Hills on Highway 218, Gomez Garcia allegedly became agitated and picked up one of the paramedics in a “bench-press”-like lift and threw her away. A second paramedic was able to help restrain Gomez Garcia, and the ambulance continued to the UIHC.
Once the ambulance arrived at the hospital, the first paramedic complained of general soreness to her body. The other had a scratch on her finger. Both were examined by UIHC staff.
Gomez Garcia was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after noon Friday and charged with two counts of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of two years in prison.
Records show Gomez Garcia is also being held for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
